Obiedinenie 45 Supplies Concrete to the High Sea

01 January 1970

The new development is able to remain fluid for more than 6 hours and is intended for delivery without use of concrete mixing plants at long distances. According to the project, the navigational beacon foundations were embedded in concrete in the water area of the Gulf, 7 km off shore, where concrete was supplied on barge continuously, during 3 days for each beacon. It took the total of 450 cubic meters of concrete mixture that cost over RUB 2 million. The customer of work was Rosmorport (federal state-owned enterprise). The turkey contractor and project developer is GT Morstroy ZAO .

The beacons will serve as navigational landmark indicating the approach channel to the St. Petersburg marine passenger terminal that is being built on the Vassilievsky Island. The beacons had to be installed in the open water area of the gulf because it was impossible to build them on the opposite shore where the Peterhof quay is located. Similar projects are very rare, due to complexities with their implementation. For instance, there are just 10 leading beacons in the high sea in Russia.

According to Mr. Andrey Bibikov, Manager of Obiedinenie 45 OAO , «the complexity of work consisted in delivery of concrete without mixers across the sea for 2 hours. Moreover, the mixture should have remained fluid till arrival of the next consignment to ensure adhesion of the material. We were able to fulfill these requirements by applying special additives in concrete production. The mixture was selected together with the Vedeneev Institute during a month.»

The cost of the new development is by 15% higher than that of ordinary concrete. To carry out supplies, the contract was awarded to Obiedinenie 45 OAO in a tender held by GT Morstroy ZAO , before the start of construction. The four leading commodity concrete manufacturers from St. Petersburg participated in the tender. The key advantages of the winner became: precision equipment that enables to strictly comply with the required composition of the material in production and experience of participation in complex projects.

Navigational landmarks are located at 15 km off the Vassilievsky Island and 5 km off Peterhof. They are called leading beacons because they are placed along one straight line, showing directions to ships. The height of the back beacon is 33.5 meters over the sea level; that of the front beacon is 22.5 meters over the sea level. The piled foundations of the leading beacons go 38 meters down under water, including 31 meters into the land. A distance between beacons is 2 km. The light optical equipment of the leading beacons operates automatically, by turning on at sunset and by turning off at dawn. The power supply is autonomous, from batteries. The leading beacons are visible at a distance of 8-9 miles.

The structures represent a reinforced concrete grillage on a hydro-technical foundation out of 12 bent bored piles of 1,220 mm in diameter, 38.5 meters and 28.0 meters long, filled with monolith concrete. The foundations are designed to withstand wind with pulse and seismic impact of 9 on Richter scale. At first, the bored piles were hammered into the ground, then they were filled with concrete mixture, by applying consolidation by vibration using immersion vibrator. The total construction period is 3 months.
