On the results of a poll carried out by the Barrikada Combine, the most promising material for lining pipelines for the foreseeable future is likely to remain ferro-concrete. This was the answer given by more than 60% of those asked, who included the managers of the supply departments of such companies as GUP Vodokanal, ZAO SMU-53, OOO Dorozhnik-92, ZAO SMU 303, and OOO KomstroiSPb.
The main advantages of ferro-concrete were considered to be its durability, the traditional method of its application, and the fact that it is required by the Vodokanal.
According to those asked, it is particularly difficult to find an alternative to ferro-concrete reinforced rings. The main demand that consumers put on these products is that the joins should be hermetically sealed. The traditional means of joining the rings is by using a cement mortar. At present, rings are being made for the St. Petersburg market with lock joints, which not only prevent the movement of the elements of the product in the process of assembly, but also guarantee a hermetic seal. A shaft like this could be assembled using a special mastic compound, but without any cement mortar. Eighty per cent of the specialists agreed with these promising perspectives for the new development.
Not less than half of those questioned pointed out the importance of the join between the ring and various types of pipe (i.e. the coupling set), and 39% wanted to be able to put a step inside the ring to simplify servicing the shaft during exploitation. For 35% of those who replied, it was important to be able to order a ring with a factory cut aperture for a pipe outlet.
In the course of the questionnaire, specialists were also asked to evaluate the prospects for ferro-concrete pipes made according to German technology. At present on the city market, there are ferro-concrete pipes of 4 metres in length, which require heavy-loading vehicles to transport them. Petersburg manufacturers are considering the possibility of producing pipes of 2.5 metres in length. This would make it possible for customers to make substantial economies in their transportation costs — an important factor for 60% of those who replied. But unquestionably, the most important characteristic of the pipes is that they can be hermetically sealed. Eighty percent wanted the product set to include seals and couplings, which should substantially facilitate assembly.
Information obtained as a result of this study will, according to representatives of the ZAO PO Barrikada marketing service, be used in making decisions on the manufacture of new products.
